"Bob Cat"
Bobcats are rarely spotted by humans however, they are prolific and live throughout much of North America. They are nocturnal and powerful hunters. They adapt very well to their habitats. The name “Bobcat” is derived from it’s tail which short and appears to be “Bobbed”.

"Canada Lynx"
The Canada Lynx, like the Bobcat, are seldom seen by humans they are a secretive and mostly nocturnal animal and live all over the North American Continent. They shelter in areas of particularly dense forest. In regions where their range overlaps with that of other predators, such as bobcats and coyotes, they tend to hunt in areas with deeper snow cover, or at higher altitudes.

Portrait of "Snow Leopard"
Snow leopards have thick fur which allows them to live and hunt in a cold mountainous terrain. Their ears are small and rounded, indicative of most animals who live in northern and mountainous areas as this helps to minimize heat loss. Their paws are broad to help walking on snow. Snow leopards' tails are long and flexible, helping them to maintain their balance, which is very important in the rocky terrain they inhabit. They give birth in the spring with the normal litter size being one to four kittens. Their unfortunate decline is due primarily to man's greed for the rare woolly fur of this magnificent beast and the misproven, misguided belief of the medicinal value in their bones.

Twilight Vigil - Great Gray Owl.
Adults have a large round head with a gray face and yellow eyes. The eyes have darker circles around them. The underparts are light with dark streaks; the upper parts are gray with pale bars. This owl does not have ear tufts and has the largest facial disc of any raptor. The "circles" around their eyes seem to act like a radar dish to help the owl hear and with it's good vision it can "zero" in on a mouse or vole on the ground from a good distance.

Silent Sentinel
As with all owls, the Great Horned Owl is a nocturnal hunter who makes use of its superior vision to zero in on moving targets. Owls eyes are fixed in their sockets, but peripheral vision is realized by its ability to rotate its head nearly all the way around. This coupled with its acute hearing and silent flight make the owl the most efficient of night hunters.

In this painting the Great Horned Owl roosts on a fence post at eventide, hungry and alert and fully prepared for his nocturnal hunt. The penetrating stare of his exceptionally sensitive eyes reflects his ability to detect prey.

Down From The Tundra
Snowy Owls are found in the Arctic Tundra in the summer months where they nest and raise their young. They move south to the plains in the winter months where they occupy a winter hunting territory and if mice and voles are plentiful they will remain until March.

In this painting this healthy female roosts on a fallen fence post waiting for the sound of a small rodent deep in the snow.

Spring Forager
Raccoons, with their befitting harlequin black masks, are both mischievous and cunning by nature. They make their dens in hollow trees, rocky ground or ledges and prefer to hunt at night. In daylight they may forage for berries or fruit but also cause severe crop damage with their voracious appetite for corn. Perhaps their worst faults are raiding chicken coops and robbing birds nests.

This particular raccoon has wandered to the end of a tree stump and nonchalantly turned around to continue his casual afternoon forage in the still frozen river bed.

Fallen Timber
Although bobcats range throughout the forests, mountains and deserts of North America they are rarely seen in the wild. They are well equipped hunters having excellent eyesight, hearing and agility enabling them to stalk or ambush their prey. This wildcat hunts rabbits, hares, mice and squirrels mainly at night and relaxes in caves or between fallen trees during the daylight hours.

In this painting something has caught the attention of the bobcat during his relaxation, but considering the intense concentration on his face and the deliberate pivot of his body toward the intruder, the disturbance must be worthy of the cat's curiosity to merit an investigation.

Moment of Serenity
Wolves have historically maintained a "Love-Hate" relationship with humans. They are feared and admired as powerful mystical animals who play a vital part in the ecology of the wild. Their social behaviour and ability to care, teach and protect their young is admired by all wild life enthusiasts.
These large canines have beautiful hypnotic eyes, a trait which expresses their every mood from caring to ferocity. As this painting progressed, I became very aware of the tranquility it conveyed and ultimately made this the theme of the whole composition.

Depicted are two healthy timber wolves who have paused at the edge of a northern lake and tempered the rigor of their evening hunt with this curious yet peaceful "Moment of Serenity".

Lakeside Prowlers
The Timber Wolf is the largest canine native to North America and a greatly misunderstood animal. Though wolves are traditionally vilified as the terror of the winter woods and as stalkers of lone humans, no real evidence of wolves attacking people exists. Rather than being feared, wolves should be admired for the cooperative organization of their society.

We could learn from them. Wolf packs, essentially an extended family, are governed by a strict social code and ruled by the lead male and the dominant female. The leader controls the pack.

Safe From The Hounds
The Red Fox has long been renowned for its stealth and cunning, especially when being hunted and chased by hounds. Foxes have been known to double back on their own tracks, walk on fallen timber or even climb on fences to evade the deadly charge of these hunting dogs.

The fox hunt, now mercifully condemned by the majority, is the pursuit on horseback of a fox with hounds for the sake of sport. These sportsmen finally corner their victim with help of their dogs, and the climax of the hunt would be best left unmentioned.

In this painting the fox has eluded the hounds and has found refuge in the sanctuary of a cave, but the timourous expression on his face and the anxiety in his stance reflects the ordeal of the chase.

The Intrusion
The Snow Leopard mainly inhabits the high mountain regions of the Himalayas at elevations of 2,000 to 4,000 metres. It preys mostly on wild Sheep or Goats but this very agile and muscular cat can bring down a Yak which is close to three times its size. They give birth in the spring with the normal litter size being one to four kittens. Their unfortunate decline is due primarily to man's greed for the rare woolly fur of this magnificent beast and the misproven, misguided belief of the medicinal value in their bones.

In this painting the family repose has been disrupted and the kittens now sit huddled safely by their mother's side. Their gaze and attention is on you. Are you the intruder?

Feline Sanctuary
This elusive cat remains quite numerous the in Canadian North, but because of its shy secretive nature it is seldom seen close to the presence of man. The Lynx is a stout-bodied animal with exceptionally long legs and large heavy paws, thus enabling it to climb with ease over most covered rocks and logs. During rain storms or misty inclement weather, they will live and shelter in caves or among fallen timber.

In this painting the cat sits under some broken trees, which form a natural sanctuary where it patiently awaits an unwary snowshoe hare to venture within striking distance.

Woodland Watch
The Scandinavian Lynx is regarded as one of the most hansome members of the cat family, and is characterized by its large ear tufts, long legs and heavy paws. Its lustrous reddish hued winter coat make it an attractive target for trappers and hunters in the northern forested areas of Norway, Sweden and Finland. Traditionally, sheep farmers and reindeer herdsmen have been unfriendly to the lynx, believing that it preys on lambs and deer fawns. The principal diet of this beautiful feline is wild hare, mice and the occasional game bird. The lynx is an agile climber and spend much of its time on limbs of trees waiting for terrestrial birds to pass beneath.

In this painting, I portrayed the lynx relaxed in the security of a cave, but the concentration in his eyes depicts its relentless quest for prey; thus survival.
